In short. The neck is one of the areas where ageing shows most: excess fat, loose and sagging skin and prominent neck bands. A neck lift corrects these signs and gives back definition to the jawline. Depending on the case, it can be done with liposuction alone, with a platysmaplasty or with a classic neck lift, often together with a facelift. It is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, in Turin, Italy.
What a neck lift does
The signs of an ageing neck appear after weight loss or gain, and more often because of age, gravity and heredity. A neck lift treats the excess fat of the neck and, depending on the degree of laxity, repositions and tightens the underlying muscles and connective tissue and restores tone to loose skin. The result is a more defined neck and jawline.
Who it is for
excess fat under the chin and on the neck ("double chin");
vertical "bands" created by the neck muscle (platysma);
laxity or sagging of the skin of the neck and lower cheeks.
When I do not recommend surgery
First, understanding: a neck lift is not the answer to every problem of the neck. I will not suggest it if:
the main problem is skin quality (fine lines, texture, spots): a laser treatment works better;
the neck is affected but the main sagging is in the cheeks and jawline: then the right operation is a facelift, with the neck treated at the same time;
you are losing or gaining a lot of weight: it is better to wait until your weight is stable;
you smoke and cannot stop in the weeks before and after surgery, or there are health conditions that are not under control;
expectations are not realistic.

What it does
When I use it
Neck liposuction
Removes the fat that has built up under the chin and on the neck.
Mainly excess fat, with mild skin laxity and good elasticity.
Platysmaplasty, with or without liposuction
Tightens the platysma muscle, which forms the vertical bands of the neck, usually through a small incision under the chin.
Moderate laxity with visible muscle bands.
Classic neck lift (cervicoplasty)
Tightens the underlying muscles and removes excess skin, for a sharper, younger neckline.
More significant laxity, most often together with a facelift.
The consultation and preparing the skin
At the consultation we talk about what bothers you, your medical history and any previous treatments. I then examine the face and neck: skin tone, texture and elasticity, the soft tissues, the bone structure and how the neck muscles move. On this basis I suggest the procedure, or combination of procedures, that suits your case.
Preparing the skin before surgery matters. A skincare routine with hydration, an antioxidant serum, a retinoid and sunscreen helps, especially if the neck lift is combined with a facelift. When there are fine or moderate wrinkles, a resurfacing treatment of the neck, often with a fractional ablative laser (CO2 or Erbium), may be recommended before or during the operation.
The operation
The neck lift is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, managed by a specialist anaesthetist, in the operating theatre of Aesthetic Clinic in Turin, authorised by the Piedmont Region for complex outpatient surgery. The operation lasts from about 1 to 5 hours, depending on the technique and on whether other procedures are combined. You go home the same day. After sedation you must not drive that day: someone can drive you home, or you can take a taxi. Most patients feel only mild discomfort afterwards, mainly a feeling of tightness under the chin due to the tightening of the platysma.

Platysmaplasty
7 to 10 days
Classic neck lift
10 to 14 days
Classic neck lift with fat grafting or laser

Exercise: light cardio after 7 to 10 days, moderate exercise after 3 to 4 weeks, more intense exercise after about 6 weeks. These times are approximate and I confirm them at your check-ups.
If you live abroad: plan to stay in or near Turin for at least the first check-ups, and until I confirm you are ready to travel. See also International patients.
Risks and limits
A neck lift is a surgical operation and has risks, which we discuss together at the consultation: among them haematoma, temporary changes in sensation, irregularities of the skin, scars more visible than expected and, rarely, temporary weakness of a muscle of the lower lip. A neck lift does not stop ageing and does not improve skin quality on its own.
What patients say
“I always had excess skin under my chin, which made it look as if I had no neck. As I got older it got worse, and in the end I decided it was time to do something… The neck lift Dr Giulio Maria Maggi performed on me not only beautifully reshaped my face, but also brought out a more self-confident, outgoing me. It is something I should have done years ago.”

How much does a neck lift cost?
The cost depends on the technique and on whether the neck lift is combined with a facelift or other procedures. Because every case is different, I define it after the consultation, in a personalised written quote that also shows the first available date for surgery.
Frequently asked questions
Can a neck lift be done without a facelift?
Yes, when the problem is limited to the neck and the area under the chin. When the cheeks and jawline have also descended, the neck lift is usually combined with a facelift.
When can I go back to work after a neck lift?
As a rough guide: 4 to 7 days after liposuction only, 7 to 10 days after platysmaplasty, 10 to 14 days after a classic neck lift, and 14 to 21 days if fat grafting or laser are added.
